Mugen, Jin, and Fuu careen through time and cultures like pool balls on a wild carom as Shinchiro Watanabe’s Samurai Champloo continus. In the accompanying notes, writer Dai Sato comments that he and Watanabe “like counterculture and rebellious music.” No wonder Mugen stumbles onto an anti-government cabal of medieval warrior-priests–and shares a Jimi Hendrix song with them. In the darker episode 11, taciturn Jin falls for a woman who has been sold into prostitution to pay her husband’s gambling debts. Mugen and Jin finally realize that they’re getting no closer to finding the mysterious “samurai who smells of sunflowers,” so they take advantage of a lull to read Fuu’s diary. Her blunt comments about their looks, demeanor, and behavior don’t please her prying companions, but they add a dose of humor to an episode comprised of flashbacks. Complex and troubling, the documentary Oswald’s Ghost examines what happened after the Kennedy assassination–it is less about possible conspiracies than about how the belief in conspiracies has affected our culture and those who pursud them. The abundance of archival footage of Lee Harvey Oswald after his arrest–sometimes in press conferences, sometimes simply being transported in handcuffs by officers–is startling and fascinating. The interviewees include one-time presidential candidate Gary Hart, former news anchor Dan Rather, author Norman Mailer (who, over the course of researching his book Oswald’s Tale, changed his mind about whether Oswald acted alone), and the numerous authors of books on the subject. Oswald’s Ghost presents arguments from all sides and may upset anyone with a rigid mind about the issu, but its fluid and hypnotic narrative will engage even viewers with only a casual interest in the topic. The extra features, which are just as compelling as the movie itself, include a much more extensive discourse on the Zapruder film and a thoughtful interview with the director, Robert Stone (Gurilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst), who explains how he wanted to make film that would interest people on either side of the conspiracy qustion. Jane Fonda’s memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying than anything else. –Tom Keogh

After making a critically acclaimed debut with the low-budget independent drama Heavy, writer-director James Mangold took on this gritty crime drama, which was highly touted as Sylvester Stallone’s long-awaited return to a serious dramatic role. With an illustrious cast of costars, including GoodFellas alumni Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta, Stallone plays Freddy Heflin, the ineffectual sheriff of a New Jersey suburb that a group of corrupt New York cops have turned into their own off-duty criminal empire. Deaf in one ear and desperate to prove his worth, the sheriff takes on the cops with standoffish assistance from an Internal Affairs cop (De Niro), resulting in an explosive climactic showdown. The stellar cast can’t be beat, and Stallone is quite good as the overweight cop whose pride is on the line. Mangold’s script is wildly uneven, but the film still packs a white-knuckled punch. –Jeff Shannon
